16. After Midnight
âThe darkness, the terrible, terrible darkness!â
Hans writhed, his eyelids closed tight, as he shook and struggled on the small bed of leaves. Marco and Simon held him down, each grabbing an arm.
âWhat is wrong with him?â Isobel asked.
Marco didnât respond, instead holding Hans down even tighter. âYou need to calm down,â he urged the servant. âDeep breaths. In and out.â
âWho are you to order me about?â Hans muttered in a low voice from the depths of his throat. âWho are you to be respected?â
Marco widened his eyes in surprise at Hansâ tone.
âWhat is the matter with you?â
âThe darkness,â Hans whispered with a hoarse gravel in his voice. âIt is all here around me.â
âIs he possessed?â asked Simon.
âIf my soul went into Hansâ body Iâd be quick to get back out,â muttered Flora.
âShh,â said Isobel.
âWell itâs true.â Flora couldnât help but smile. âI mean, have you met him?â
Isobel tried not to giggle. âThis is serious, Flora. Something is wrong.â
Marco snapped his head to stare Isobel and Flora down, âCould you two stop with the tryst for just a moment and help us?â
Isobel put her hands to her hips. âWell Iâm so sorry, Doctor Marco, I didnât realize we were obstructing a great physician.â
âStop,â Simon said. âJust all of you stop, before he jumps up and kills us all!â
âDo you really think I would kill you?â Hansâ eyes had opened and stared into Simonâs soul. âIt is not I who wishes your demise, puppet thief.â
Simon narrowed his eyes at the servant. âWhat?â
âSome are not born for happy endings.â Hans grinned, and for the first time Simon noticed that his eye teeth were pointed. âSome are merely cattle for slaughter, fools approaching doom like a firework racing toward explosions in the sky.â
âStop talking, Hans.â Marco pushed Hans by the forehead back to the forest floor. âYouâre saying crazy things.â
Hans winced at the force of the princeâs hands and resumed his wincing and writhing. âSomething clings in my heart. Something dark. Help me.â
Marco lowered his ear to Hansâ chest, listened to his heartbeat. As he did, Hans glanced down at the top of Marcoâs head and back at Simon before he winked at him.Simon felt his cheeks burn up, tried not to show that he actually felt jealous at this. Prince Marco lifted his head again and Hans resumed writhing as though nothing had happened.
Heâs faking this, Simon thought. For whatever reason.
Simon stood and walked toward the shore of the lake. Heâd had enough of Hans for now.
When heâd gone a distance, Hans slowly stopped writhing, breathed deep. âI want to rest now. Please leave me. I need to sleep. That is all.â
Simon looked back at the servant to see that he was fast, and deeply, asleep.
âIdiot,â Flora muttered under her breath.
âDo you think heâll be all right, Marco?â Isobel asked.
Marco didnât respond to her.
âMarco.â
He still did not respond.
âHey!â Isobel tried not to shout so she wouldnât wake the servant. âOh, fine.â
Prince Marco stood and walked away, toward his own bed of leaves.
